Disability4Sport has joined our City Centre community, and it is a real pleasure to welcome them. This Colchester-based community interest company creates inclusive sporting opportunities for disabled people, offering positive experiences that help people build confidence, make connections, and feel part of something.

A local story that started in 2012

Founded in 2012 by Abigail Saxon and Jordan Smith, Disability4Sport grew from the momentum and pride that followed the London Paralympic Games. With early support from The Prince’s Trust, the organisation set out to make sure disabled people in our area had more chances to take part in sport, build confidence, and feel part of something.

Jordan’s journey and the power of representation

Jordan, who grew up in Brightlingsea, was born prematurely and developed cerebral palsy which affects his legs. At school, PE was not always built for him. Over time, he discovered his sporting potential, and at 20 he achieved a huge personal milestone by representing the England cerebral palsy football team, going on to earn 17 caps.

Inspiration from Paralympian Zoe Newson

Disability4Sport’s Patron, Paralympic bronze medallist Zoe Newson, has been part of their story since the beginning. Zoe, who is from Ipswich and was born with growth hormone deficiency, first tried powerlifting in 2006 with the Suffolk Spartans club in Colchester. Her journey into elite sport has continued to inspire Disability4Sport members to see what is possible and to set bold goals of their own.

Building a stronger, more inclusive community

What Disability4Sport offers goes far beyond sport itself. It is about giving people the chance to take part, meet others, and feel welcome. It is about pride, confidence, and the kind of positive experiences that ripple out into families, friendships, and the wider community.

Looking ahead to a specialist sports centre

Disability4Sport’s long-term goal is to open a specialist sports centre, run for and by disabled people. It is a big ambition, and it is exactly the kind of community-led vision we love to see. We are proud to have Disability4Sport based with us, and we cannot wait to see what comes next.
